IN TRANSIT
A poem after the style of Procedure, by Jo Shapcott.

Holding my cup of coffee
and inhaling the aroma
at last I am still & the consciousness

arises, the consciousness of the now
and the just then, when, between trains
I was speeding towards disaster,

admittedly small by way of comparison
to the plight of refugees, yet big
enough to almost make me panic

as the passing thought revealed to me
my mistake, and I hurriedly retraced my steps
and waited for the next train,

not yet daring to allow the relief to flow
through me, and now, as the coffee’s aroma rises
I say , thank you, thank you, thank you for the then, and now
